Copperfield Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Damper Repair: The Shelton Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Copperfield-compatible damper repair parts for Shelton homeowners, with most jobs running $280-$520 installed depending on whether we’re replacing the plate, the frame, or the full assembly. Parts are on our trucks, and we can usually have you burning the same evening we arrive. Most folks in Shelton realize their damper has failed when they feel a cold downdraft across the hearth even with the damper “closed,” or when smoke backs into the room on the first fire of the season.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield dampers fall into a few distinct series, and matching the right repair kit matters more than with some other brands. The 600-series throat dampers are the workhorses we see in most Shelton homes built between 1975 and 1995, especially the 600, 601, and 603 models with the cast-iron frame and 8-inch or 10-inch lift handle. The 800-series top-sealing dampers came later and mount at the chimney crown rather than the throat; these use a cable-and-spring system that fails differently and requires a different repair approach entirely.

To identify yours, look for the stamped model number on the damper frame, visible from the firebox with a flashlight. It’s usually on the left side of the throat, though soot can obscure it. If the plate is warped or rusted through, the number may be gone; in that case we measure the throat opening and handle offset to match the replacement. We carry both OEM Copperfield repair kits and quality equivalents from Olympia Chimney that meet the same specs. For the 600-series, the aftermarket frame often outlasts the original in our experience, especially in Shelton’s freeze-thaw cycles where the original cast iron can fatigue after twenty-five years.

Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Copperfield. We source parts through the same professional supply houses that stock DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco.

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing

  • Cold air pouring down the flue. The damper plate has warped or the frame has cracked, breaking the seal. We see this most in older 600-series units where the cast iron has cycled through too many Shelton winters.
  • Smoke filling the room on startup. The plate is stuck open, stuck closed, or only partially operable. A plate that won’t fully open chokes the fire; one that won’t fully close lets downdrafts push smoke back at you.
  • The handle turns but nothing moves. The linkage pin has corroded through or the plate has separated from the lift mechanism. This is common in homes near the Housatonic where summer humidity accelerates rust.
  • Rattling or grinding when you operate the handle. The pivot pins are worn oval, or debris has lodged in the track. Left alone, this galling will seize the mechanism entirely.
  • Visible rust holes or cracks in the plate. Once the metal is perforated, the damper cannot seal against carbon monoxide backdraft or heat loss. We document this with camera photos so you can see exactly what we see.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Repair Scope Typical Installed Price What’s Included
Damper plate replacement (600-series) $280-$380 OEM or equivalent plate, gasket, hardware, labor, camera inspection
Full frame and plate assembly $420-$520 Complete throat damper, refractory seal, labor, photo report
800-series top-sealing damper cable repair $340-$480 Cable, spring, mounting hardware, labor, function test

What drives the range is access. A wide Rumford-style firebox in a Huntington Center colonial gives us room to work; a narrow throat in a 1920s bungalow off Howe Avenue means more time and sometimes temporary refractory work. We price upfront before we start. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Every damper repair carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, no arguing. If it’s not right, we come back.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check whether the handle turns freely, shine a flashlight up the flue to spot obvious rust holes, and verify the plate moves when the handle operates. What you should not do is attempt to remove a seized damper plate yourself. The frame is mortared into the throat, and prying at it risks dropping debris into the flue or cracking the smoke chamber. The 800-series cable spring carries enough tension to snap if mishandled.

We carry Copperfield-compatible parts on every truck, and most repairs finish in a single visit. If you’re not sure what you’ve got, call us at (475) 265-6822. We’ll talk through the symptoms and schedule a look.
